Christmas is here!

Christmas is a special time at the Homes not only because families are more likely to pay a visit to their
elderly relatives but also because of the festive atmosphere and delicious food.

Paul's menu this year is Glazed Gammon with Roasted Chicken, potatoes and butternut, with rice and broccoli and cauliflower gratin.
Dessert is Christmas Trifle and if anyone has any room left there are always the mince pies if there are any left by Christmas

These are especially delicious and have been selling like hot cakes.......er... mince pies which by the way are great served slightly warm with cream or boozy butter. Scroll down for the recipe. Various companies and private individuals contribute to the Christmas lunch and guests who are coming this year are providing the crackers and wine.

Linda and her staff have decorated the halls and lounges absolutely beautifully and it all looks so festive and welcoming.

My Very Best Wishes to all at the Homes for a Wonderful Christmas and a Great New Year.

To all our Donors and Friends who have been so generous and supportive this year, we wish you a Joyful Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Boozy Butter

75g butter at room temp, 75g caster sugar, one and a half tablespoons brandy, 1 teaspoon lemon juice.
Beat butter until white and creamy. Add sugar gradually, beating well. Add brandy a few drops at a time still beating. Lastly beat in the lemon juice. Transfer to serving dish and chill 2-3 hours.

Time to Bake that Christmas Cake

At this time of year our thoughts turn to Christmas and inevitably to Christmases past. As children it seemed to us that the day would never come but to our long suffering parents especially mum there was never enough time to get everything done!

In an old cookery book which was donated to the Homes I came across a faded handwritten recipe from a mother to her daughter for a Christmas fruitcake. I have one myself in my mother's handwriting and so I was very interested to read this one.
It starts off "Darling Judy," and goes on to list the recipe and method and poignantly at the end she adds
Don't forget to have a stir 3 times around and a happy wish. You have an extra wish for me. Thanks. All my love Mom.xxxxxxxx"  How special.

The Annual Fete was fantastic and all the more so because none of us would have imagined that the Community would turn out in that awful weather to support us.
We have had so many compliments regarding all the products on offer at the Fete so very well done to all the people who worked so hard and who donated time and money so generously to make the event the astonishing success it was.

In his speech at the Home's AGM recently chairman Pat Mclaverty said
"Most importantly, the people of Eshowe, Zululand and beyond have been extremely generous in time, goods, expertise and money in support of the home. Thank you to all concerned. Without community support, this home would not survive."

Building ,Bunnies, Bears and Barbi.

I heard someone say this week that it is almost Christmas again!
We have so much more to do at the Homes before we start making puddings and wrapping pressies!

First on the list is the new Admin block which will provide extra office space, a recreation room for the nursing staff, a staff flat and a high care unit with facilities for family visitors. Also in the mix is a waiting room, dressing room, and a  bathroom renovation. These have all become necessary as the Homes reputation has spread throughout KZN and as a result the Homes are full to capacity.
The plans have been passed and are ready for Tender. Hopefully it will not be too long before the first sod is turned.

Proposed offices, high care facility, waiting room and bathroom renovation.

Next on the list is the  ANNUAL  FETE which will take place in Saturday 27th October, 2012.
It promises to be the usual fantastic community affair and an event in the Eshowe calender that should not be missed!!!!
Our generous friends have  been donating and offering collectibles for the Knick Knack stall and we have some beautiful bone china in storage as well as linen and household goods.
The craft groups have been busy with cards and quilts, fab cushions, bags, and this year we are especially catering for the young ones with toys and clothes.

May and June Events

The Queen's Diamond Jublilee was watched with great enjoyment last weekend bringing back so many memories both happy and sad to our residents, many of whom are the same age as the Queen and some even older. What a shining example she is of growing old gracefully and surely she must have top marks for endurance  during that long wet afternoon on the Thames!
I spend every Monday morning at the Homes and I always come away uplifted by the courage and wisdom of the residents and their compassion towards each other. I have watched people come in perhaps reluctantly placed there by their children, sometimes tearful and confused and in a month or so they have settled down and started to enjoy the day to day activities and companionship.

Thursday Morning Tea

One of the highlights of the week is the Thursday  open morning when visitors come to enjoy a delicious tea and socialize with the residents. This Thursday last the winner of Jan's beautiful quilt was drawn. The lucky winner was Paris Sumner and the total raised was an amazing R2.200.00.
Well done Jan, a splendid result!

Winter Woolies

The start of winter  in Zululand is really quite welcome.  Gone are the humidity and heat  and the days are still warm and the birds and flowering shrubs are a joy to behold.

As the nights become cooler its time to get out the knitting needles and the knitters at the Homes have been busy already creating kids' sweaters, beanies and cosy fingerless gloves and scarves.
These fingerless gloves are great for those rather chilly days when one's hands are cold but one needs one's fingers free. Knitters are prepared to take orders and very generously donate the proceeds to the Homes.

Someone has even requested a sweater for her little dog!

The Craft Workshop is ongoing and the fabric stash in the cupboard is gradually being replaced with baby quilts and play mats, table runners, cushion covers and bags.

We will be having jewellery and card making demos in the near future and anyone who would like to join us is very welcome.

Two stonecutters were asked what they were doing. The first said, 'I'm cutting this damned stone into blocks' The second replied, "I'm on a team that's building a cathedral". Anon

While we are not exactly building a cathedral we are working towards helping to finance the new administration block which will provide a much needed extension to the Frail Residents diningroom, offices for the executive staff, a restroom for the nursing staff and maybe even a small activities room and storeroom.
So watch this space!!!

Upcycling and Renewing.

They say a picture paints a thousand words so I have used a few  to illustrate my theme of "upcycling" and renewing.

We receive donations of all kinds at the Homes and do our best to make use of every single item. Fabric, habby and all sorts of hobby items are thrown out by family when an elderly person moves into the Home or passes away which is a good lesson to all of us who hoard "stuff"!
Our Monday morning group has had a lot of fun reworking some of the fabric into quilts and here is Jan with an African themed creation.

Doilies are another popular item to be thrown out  and I am happy to say that most of the hundreds we receive have found new homes, some have even been taken by visitors back home to Norway.
A precious finely knitted doily arrived in a sad condition and was lovingly laundered and pressed by Debra and will be framed as a now trendy piece of art.
A china doll will receive a new body and clothes, knitted bears have been stuffed and had new faces embroidered on them. Costume jewellery is repaired and cleaned and sold or the beads reused.
Knitting yarn is turned into items for sale or blankets and cosy beanies for the needy.
Our Grannies, bless their hearts, were experts at reusing and making do and mending and this skill is as much needed  in todays world as it was then.

Sunbonnet Sue
I have been loved before, please love me again!!
The annual Easter Tea takes place this Thursday 29th at 10.00am and we are hoping we will have a good turnout. In addition to the scrumptious tea there will be needlework, vintage clutter and preserves for sale.

The Homes Garden

Yesterday I visited the Homes with my camera and took some pictures of the newly established garden path, which was generously donated by the relatives of past residents of the Homes.
The path meanders from the front of the building down the side, past the aviary and down to a minature rose garden complete with a charming figurine and fountain.
The aviaries are maintained by maintinence manager  Des Coetzee who has received all sorts of furry and feathered  creatures from various members of the community.

Rose Garden

Looking down towards the rose garden

The garden has been superbly revamped by passionate gardener Mary v Tooren and frail  residents can enjoy a stroll  with the help of the safety rail and the even path makes wheelchair riding a pleasure.
One resident told me that the  benches at the end of the path are a favourite spot in the evenings for relaxing after dinner.

Craft sessions have started again and this year the emphasis will be on patchwork so we are looking for cotton remnants. Some of our ladies are also keen on handwork so we are stitching items in felt .
Quilts in progress
Anyone is welcome at our Monday morning meetings at the Homes, the only qualification needed is a love of sewing and handwork. If anyone would like to come and demonstrate their own particular craft they will also be very welcome. Our patchwork is very simple so I would welcome an expert to come along and get involved.
Don't forget the sale of crafts at the Homes is ongoing, choose from a extensive variety of useful gifts and household items, all at very reasonable prices.
